When the double bond is not in the exact middle (unsymmetrical alkene) of the chain there are 2 possible products
E.g.


- The more alkyl groups there are attached to the carbon atom, the more stable the carbocation is
Which brings me on to primary, secondary and tertiary carbocation:
- If 1 alkyl group attached (as in the diagram we call it a Primary carbocation- If 2 alkyl groups attached this we call it a Secondary carbocation
- If 3 alkyl groups attached we call it a Tertiary carbocation
